What this test is
IgM antibodies appear 4–5 days into dengue illness and stay positive for about 2–3 months. IgG appears later and persists for years, marking past infection. Used when NS1 has come back negative but dengue is still suspected after day 5 of fever. Both together also help distinguish a first dengue infection from a repeat (higher risk of severe disease).
When you need this test
- Fever for more than 5 days with NS1 negative
- Suspected past dengue exposure
- Confirmation in late-presenting cases
How to prepare
- No fasting required.
- Best done after day 5 of fever — IgM is not yet detectable before that.
