What this test is

Sodium, potassium, and chloride are tightly regulated by the kidneys and adrenal glands. Imbalances cause weakness, confusion, palpitations, or worse. Often ordered during acute illness, dehydration, kidney problems, or when starting/stopping diuretics. Potassium in particular needs careful monitoring on ACE inhibitors and ARBs.

This panel reports 3 parameters

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Chloride

When you need this test

  • Severe vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Weakness, palpitations, or muscle cramps
  • Monitoring diuretic therapy
  • Kidney disease follow-up
  • Heart failure follow-up

How to prepare

  • No fasting required.
  • Tell us about all current medications, especially diuretics, BP medications, or potassium supplements.
  • Avoid clenching your fist tightly during the draw — releases potassium from muscle cells and falsely raises the result.

FAQs

  • Why does the technician say 'don't clench'?
Forceful muscle clenching releases potassium from cells into the blood sample, giving a falsely high potassium reading.
  • Can dehydration affect the result?
Yes — significant dehydration raises sodium and chloride. Tell us if you've had recent diarrhoea or limited fluid intake.
