What this test is

The third-trimester growth scan estimates the baby's weight and growth percentile, measures amniotic fluid, checks the placenta, and uses Doppler to evaluate blood flow in the umbilical artery and other vessels. Done at 28–34 weeks routinely, and more often if there are concerns about restricted growth, diabetes, or hypertension in pregnancy.

When you need this test

  • 28–34 weeks routine growth check
  • Suspected small-for-dates or large-for-dates baby
  • Gestational diabetes monitoring
  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension
  • Reduced foetal movements

How to prepare

  • No fasting required.
  • Eat normally — an active baby is easier to image.
  • Drink water and stay hydrated.
  • Bring all antenatal reports and any previous growth scans.

FAQs

  • How accurate is the weight estimate?
Within 10% of actual birth weight in most cases. Less accurate for very large or very small babies.
  • Why Doppler?
Doppler measures blood flow in the umbilical artery. Abnormal flow can be an early sign of placental problems, allowing early intervention.
  • How often is this scan needed?
Once at 28–32 weeks in low-risk pregnancies. Every 2–4 weeks if concerns about growth or placental function.
