What this test is
The first-trimester pregnancy scan confirms the pregnancy, dates it within 3–5 days of accuracy, and checks the heart beat. Done around 11–14 weeks, it also measures nuchal translucency (NT) — a soft marker for Down syndrome risk that is combined with blood tests for the combined first-trimester screening. Early scans (before 8 weeks) are done by TVS; later in the first trimester abdominal scan is sufficient.

How to prepare
- Drink 4 glasses of water 1 hour before for an abdominal scan after 10 weeks.
- For very early scans (under 8 weeks), TVS is usual — empty bladder.
- Carry your last period date and any previous pregnancy reports.
- Partner is welcome to attend.
