What this test is

A Pap smear collects cells from the cervix and examines them under a microscope for early cancer or pre-cancer changes. Most cervical cancer is preventable with regular screening, since pre-cancerous changes can be treated long before they turn into cancer. Indian guidelines recommend a Pap test every 3 years for women aged 21–65, more often if previous results were abnormal.

FAQs

  • Is it painful?
Mild discomfort for about 1 minute. Our female sonographer/technician performs the collection in a private examination room.
  • How often should I do it?
Every 3 years if results are normal. More often (annually) if previous abnormal results, immunocompromised, or DES-exposed.
  • Should I do an HPV test too?
Co-testing with HPV (Pap + HPV) is recommended for women over 30 and extends screening to every 5 years if both negative. Discuss with your gynaecologist.
  • Why does it take 3–5 days?
Cells must be fixed, stained, and examined microscopically by a trained cytopathologist — this is a manual, careful process.
