What this test is
PSA is a protein made by the prostate gland. Levels rise with age, prostate enlargement (BPH), infection (prostatitis), and prostate cancer. Most physicians offer annual PSA screening to men from age 50, or from 45 if there is a family history of prostate cancer. Mild elevations are common and usually benign — but persistent rising values warrant further evaluation.

FAQs
What is a normal PSA?
Generally under 4 ng/mL, but age-adjusted ranges are preferred. Discuss your specific result with a urologist.Does high PSA mean cancer?
Not necessarily. Most elevations are due to benign prostate enlargement or infection. Persistently rising values warrant ultrasound and possibly biopsy. How often should I test?
Annually from age 50 (or 45 with family history). More often if values are borderline.
