What this test is
Ultrasound of the whole abdomen uses sound waves — no radiation — to image the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and bladder. It is the first-line investigation for many abdominal symptoms including gallstones, kidney stones, fatty liver, and abdominal pain. Fasting helps because gas in the intestines blocks ultrasound waves and a full gallbladder is easier to image.

How to prepare
- Fasting for 6 hours before the scan — only water allowed.
- Drink 4–6 glasses of water 1 hour before the scan; do not urinate until done.
- Wear loose clothing that allows access to the abdomen.
- Carry any previous sonography reports.
