What this test is
A stool routine examination looks for parasites (giardia, amoeba), worms, undigested food, blood, mucus, and white cells. It is the first investigation for persistent diarrhoea, chronic abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss. Sample collection at home is acceptable as long as it reaches the lab within 1–2 hours in a clean, sealed container.

How to prepare
- Avoid laxatives, enemas, or barium for 48 hours before collection.
- Collect a fresh sample (less than 1 hour old) in a clean, dry, sealed container.
- Do not contaminate with urine or water.
- If collected at home, deliver within 1 hour; otherwise refrigerate.
- Sterile containers are available at our centre on request.
