- Duration
- 25 min

- Not needed
What this test is
Carotid Doppler uses ultrasound to measure blood flow through the two large arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain. It detects plaque build-up (atherosclerosis) and narrowing that can increase stroke risk. Recommended for patients with strong cardiovascular risk factors, transient ischaemic attacks (mini-strokes), or before major heart surgery.
When you need this test
- Stroke or TIA (mini-stroke)
- Strong cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes + hypertension + smoking)
- Suspicious neck bruit (whooshing sound) on examination
- Before major cardiac or carotid surgery
- Workup for unexplained dizziness or vision loss
How to prepare
- No fasting required.
- Wear an open-neck shirt or kurta.
- Remove necklace or chain.

FAQs
How serious is carotid narrowing?
Narrowing over 70% significantly raises stroke risk and is usually treated with surgery or stenting. Lesser narrowing is managed with medications and lifestyle changes. Is it painful?
Not at all. Probe over the neck with gel, painless. How is it different from echo?
Echo images the heart. Carotid Doppler images the neck arteries — different tests for related but distinct problems.
