What this test is
Fasting blood sugar measures glucose in your blood after at least 8 hours without food (water is fine). Normal is under 100 mg/dL; 100–125 mg/dL is pre-diabetic; 126 mg/dL or above on two occasions confirms diabetes. It is the simplest and most widely used screening test for diabetes in India.
When you need this test
- Annual diabetes screening (age 30+ or family history)
- Symptoms: thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss

How to prepare
- Fast for at least 8 hours — only plain water is allowed.
- Avoid coffee, tea, juice, and chewing gum during the fast.
- If you take diabetes medication, do not take it before the test — bring it with you and take after the draw.
