What this test is
Vitamin B12 is essential for nerve function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. India has one of the highest rates of B12 deficiency in the world — vegetarian diets, malabsorption, and long-term acid-suppressing medications all contribute. Low B12 causes tingling in hands and feet, memory problems, low mood, and a specific type of anaemia. Levels under 200 pg/mL are deficient; 200–300 are borderline; over 300 is adequate.

FAQs
How is deficiency treated?
Oral tablets (1000–1500 mcg daily) work for most people. Severe deficiency may need a course of intramuscular injections.I take supplements — should I still test?
Yes — supplements work differently for different people. A baseline measurement is useful before deciding on dose. How often should vegetarians check?
Every 1–2 years if asymptomatic. Sooner if you develop tingling, fatigue, or memory issues. Why is B12 deficiency so common in India?
B12 is found mostly in animal foods — meat, fish, eggs, dairy. Vegetarian diets supply less, and absorption drops with age, antacids, and diabetes drugs.
